Owners face big fee hike to retrieve their lost pets

Pet owners in Cumberland County may have to pay more to retrieve their lost pets if they end up at the Animal Control shelter.

The countys policy committee has approved a hike in fees for animals picked up from the shelter. Current fees are $7 per day. The new fees would be $30 the first day and $10 for each additional day.

Animal Control Director John Lauby told the committee it costs the county between $15 and $20 per day to keep an animal at the shelter.

Were just trying to increase the fees enough to where we can get close to that, Lauby said.

CLB-2 field exercise combines realistic efficient training

Marines and sailors with Combat Logistics Battalion 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group conducted a field exercise aboard Camp Lejeune, NC, April 25-30.

The battalion completed the exercise in preparation of their upcoming deployment to Afghanistan in late 2012.

In addition to the usual pre-deployment requirements, such as improvised explosive device detection classes and health screenings, the battalion has banded together to conduct extensive field exercises coupled with annual training.  Every Marine in the Corps must complete weapons training, swim qualification and continued education per yearly requirements.

San Francisco Taking Steps to Care for Pets During Earthquakes

Located along California’s San Andreas Fault, the city of San Francisco is likely to take precautions in the event of the next big earthquake.

According to a New York Times report, emergency planners in San Francisco are not only thinking of human evacuation plans in the event of an earthquake, but also of how to care for pets during a natural disaster. ‘Pit bull’ may be removed from county ordinance

Pit bulls may no longer be mentioned in DeKalb County’s ordinance if a proposed text amendment passes the Board of Commissioners next month.

Marian Eisenberg, zoning administrator, told commissioners April 10 that the intent of the amendment is to remove “pit bulls” from the county’s definition of household pets in the county’s ordinance.

“There are many different breeds of dogs that can be considered dangerous and ‘pit bull’ is just a slang term for four other breeds of dogs,” Eisenberg said.
