Pet owners in Cumberland County may have to pay more to retrieve their lost pets if they end up at the Animal Control shelter.

The countys policy committee has approved a hike in fees for animals picked up from the shelter. Current fees are $7 per day. The new fees would be $30 the first day and $10 for each additional day.

Animal Control Director John Lauby told the committee it costs the county between $15 and $20 per day to keep an animal at the shelter.

Were just trying to increase the fees enough to where we can get close to that, Lauby said.

According to a New York Times report, emergency planners in San Francisco are not only thinking of human evacuation plans in the event of an earthquake, but also of how to care for pets during a natural disaster. Pit bulls may no longer be mentioned in DeKalb County’s ordinance if a proposed text amendment passes the Board of Commissioners next month.

Marian Eisenberg, zoning administrator, told commissioners April 10 that the intent of the amendment is to remove “pit bulls” from the county’s definition of household pets in the county’s ordinance.

“There are many different breeds of dogs that can be considered dangerous and ‘pit bull’ is just a slang term for four other breeds of dogs,” Eisenberg said.
